Zack & Miri Make a Porno, No More Disney DTV Sequels, TV DVD News, Don't Forget the Lyrics!, Female Prez on "24?", Mike Fright, Comic Previews

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Kevin Smith has sold a script by writing a six word title on a piece of paper and handing it to Harvey Weinstein. "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" is the title and when Weinstein read those words he shelled out a $15 million budget. Smith calls it "A bawdy sex comedy with heart." It is about two friends who have trudged into their 30s with a total lack of accomplishment. At their 15-year high school reunion (when they are having rent problems) they come up with a moneymaking idea. Smith promises his characteristic sexual verbosity, coupled with matching imagery. Smith says: "It's . . . dirty, with nudity. But funny nudity, not gratuitous nudity." Here's a link to the L.A. Times story.

No More DTV Sequels For Disney

The Walt Disney Company will no longer produce direct-to-video sequels of its animated features. Reporter Jim Hill says here that Sharon Morrill, president of DisneyToon Studios, will step down as part of the decision to shut down the group that produces the DVD sequels. Pixar executives Steve Jobs and John Lasseter had publicly complained about the quality of the sequels, while Disney executives had responded that the sequels had proved very successful for the studio. After Disney acquired Pixar, Lasseter made the decision to halt further production of the DVD sequels and fire Morrill after viewing a "work-in-progress version" of "The Tinkerbell Movie," which is described as "an awful mess." Lasseter complained to Disney chief Robert Iger that the film was "virtually unwatchable." As a direct result of that meeting "some $30 million worth of animation had to be scrapped."

Don't Forget the Lyrics!

Wayne Brady will host Fox's new karaoke-themed game show "Don't Forget the Lyrics!" The show will have a two-night launch for the half-hour series July 11 and 12. The show will have contestants singing alongside a studio band with lyrics projected onscreen. When the music stops the words disappear, and that's when the competitors must continue. Whoever successfully finish 10 songs get the show's top prize of $1 million. The first two episodes of "Lyrics" air July 11 at 9:30 p.m. and July 12 at 8:30 p.m.

Female Prez on "24?"

"24" has always been popular among Washington's elite, that includes former president Bill Clinton, who recently said it was one of his favorite shows "even though an uber-right-wing guy writes it." The co-creator of the show is Joel Surnow, an outspoken Republican. Now the show may foreshadow another Clinton in the White House. "24" broke ground introducing the first black president on a TV series (Dennis Haysbert), the show is considering introducing a female president for the upcoming season. Sources stressed that there has been no final decision.

Infinity Express
Cecil W. McCall loved his Uncle Shelby. When the old man disappeared and was presumed dead, it affected him greatly. Then came the package, his uncle's legacy. In the package were Time Bands: devices that promised to take the wearer back in time. But Uncle Shelby hadn't left much in the way of instructions. So when McCall accidentally set them off, he was thrown back into the Victorian era, without much preparation. Being a comic and a trivia expert wasn't a lot of help, but being a history nut was.
When he saw he was in the England of Jack The Ripper
he knew what he had to do. With the aid of
Arthur Conan Doyle & the Real Sherlock Holmes,
he sets out to catch the Ripper, find his Uncle and go home.
On the way he meets
Adam Worth (The Real Professor Moriarty),
Dr. Treves & The Elephant Man,
Bram Stoker, Gilbert & Sullivan,
Gaston Leroux (Creator of "The Phantom of the Opera"),
William Brodie, Rasputin and the Real Dracula.
He also runs into a time-traveling salesman,
Time Police and the forerunners of the Mafia.
And that is only the beginning . . .
